You may be aware of the recently announced Aged Care Regional, Rural and Remote Infrastructure Grant Opportunity which will provide funding of up to $40 million for investment in the sector.
The primary objective of the grant is to provide funding to regional, rural and remote aged care services, to upgrade old or unsuitable infrastructure or to improve or upgrade existing buildings that:
- support the delivery of aged care services; and –
- address the need for urgent maintenance and building upgrades to address impacts on quality, safety, and accessibility of services and associated staff housing.
The intended outcome of the aged care grant opportunity is to improve access and/or quality of aged care services in regional, rural and remote Australia.
The purchase and installation of renewable energy equipment in remote locations, including where the electricity supply is unreliable or is a significant cost for the aged care service provider, is deemed an eligible activity for the grant.

How is the funding awarded?
The funding is awarded on a competitive basis. Therefore, all applications should clearly address the eligibility criteria.

- An approved residential or home care provider (as defined under the Aged Care Act 1997) or an approved Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) provider in exceptional circumstances; and
- Currently operating an aged care service located in Modified Monash Model Classification 3-7 or if a CHSP provider, the service is located in MMM 6-7. (MMM Locator).
What are the key dates for the Aged Care Regional, Rural and Remote Infrastructure Grant?
Applications close on 24 October 2018.
Should I still consider energy productivity and renewable energy projects?
Yes, with the rising cost of energy, the payback periods for LED projects are around 2-3 years and are around 3 – 4 years for solar projects. There has never been a better time to invest in energy efficiency initiatives which will have an instant impact on your bottom line. Some projects will help you drive down costs by reducing your energy consumption and reduce network charges by reducing your demand.
If you are unable to prepare and submit your application before the closing date or have been unsuccessful in securing funding from the Aged Care Regional, Rural and Remote Infrastructure Grant, energy productivity and renewable energy projects could still make a significant impact on your energy consumption and network charges.
