<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>The Australian electricity market is rarely boring these days. Coal stations are closing, solar is flooding the grid during the middle of the day, and the wholesale market is increasingly behaving like a commodity trading desk rather than a utility service.</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That was the theme of our recent webinar on <strong>commercial batteries</strong>, and why more businesses are starting to look at them not just as a sustainability project, but as an investment.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here are five takeaways.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>1. Volatility is the new normal</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Electricity prices in the National Electricity Market are moving around more than they used to. Solar generation can push daytime prices extremely low — sometimes even negative — while supply constraints later in the day can cause sharp spikes.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For most businesses on retail contracts this volatility is hidden behind fixed pricing, but it still exists in the underlying market.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And it’s that volatility that batteries are designed to capture.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>2. Futures markets smooth things out</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Most commercial electricity contracts are priced off the <strong>futures market</strong>, where retailers hedge expected wholesale prices years in advance.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That provides stability for customers, but it also means the real-time drama of the spot market is largely invisible.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Meanwhile traders and grid-scale batteries are increasingly profiting from those short bursts of price volatility.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>3. Batteries are becoming part of the grid</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Large batteries are now appearing across the grid as coal generators retire and renewable generation expands.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Their role is simple: store excess energy when supply is high and release it when supply tightens.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But that same concept can increasingly work at a <strong>commercial scale</strong>, particularly for large energy users.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>4. The revenue model is expanding</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Commercial batteries are no longer limited to simply reducing peak demand charges.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They can participate in multiple revenue streams including wholesale energy arbitrage, grid support services and demand response programs.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Stacking these revenue sources is what is starting to make the economics work.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>5. Costs are falling</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The final piece of the puzzle is cost.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Energy markets rarely move in straight lines. They evolve in steps, often quietly, when <a href="https://sustainableenergysolutions.com.au/the-business-case-for-commercial-batteries-how-large-energy-users-can-reduce-costs-in-2026-and-beyond/"><em>the economics of a technology shift from theoretical to practical</em></a>. One day the numbers don’t quite stack up; the next, they start to look difficult to ignore.</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For battery storage, one of those moments arrived last year in the National Electricity Market, when a sharp price event in New South Wales illustrated how volatility is increasingly translating into revenue.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The importance of the event wasn’t simply the headline price. The NEM has always experienced spikes. What mattered was why the spike occurred and what it revealed about the future earnings profile of flexible assets.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Because the forces behind it are no longer rare. They’re structural.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><strong>The Event: October’s Extreme Price Swing</strong></strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On <strong>10 October 2025</strong>, during the evening demand ramp, wholesale electricity prices in NSW surged dramatically, with multiple dispatch intervals clearing around <strong>$20,000/MWh</strong>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">An initial spike to roughly <strong>$20,300/MWh</strong> created significant revenue opportunities for assets able to discharge at short notice. Later in the evening, as supply conditions loosened, the market swung in the opposite direction, with prices briefly dropping below <strong>–$600/MWh</strong>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The speed and scale of that movement captured the essence of a grid in transition: one where supply and demand are increasingly shaped by weather, renewable output, and tightening firm capacity margins.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From a system perspective, this was actually a typical stress test. And that’s precisely why it matters.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><strong>What Drove the Price Spike?</strong></strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Four converging factors explain the event, each of which is becoming more common.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Strong daytime solar output suppressed prices earlier in the day, but as the sun set, supply dropped rapidly while demand remained elevated. This “duck curve” dynamic continues to steepen as rooftop PV penetration grows.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>2 &#8211; Tighter Firm Capacity</strong></h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Several dispatchable generators were unavailable or operating conservatively, leaving the system with less buffer as demand climbed.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>3 &#8211; Low Wind Contribution</strong></h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wind generation across the region was modest during the peak window, removing a key source of low-cost supply that would typically soften the price response.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>4 &#8211; Network Constraints</strong></h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Limits on interconnector flows reduced the ability to import cheaper electricity, forcing higher-cost local generation to set the marginal price.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">None of these conditions were extraordinary. Together, they formed a perfect illustration of how modern electricity markets behave under pressure.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Why Events Like This Are Becoming More Frequent</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The October spike reflects a broader structural shift in the NEM:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Renewable penetration continues to rise<br></li>



<li>Coal plant availability is becoming less predictable<br></li>



<li>Supply is increasingly weather-dependent<br></li>



<li>Demand peaks remain stubbornly high<br></li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The result is a market with widening spreads between low-price and high-price periods.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For storage assets, that spread is everything. Batteries don’t rely on high prices alone; they rely on the difference between when energy is abundant and when it’s scarce.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And those differences are becoming more pronounced.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Translating the Event Into Real-World Economics</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To put the volatility into practical terms, consider a modest front-of-the-meter battery:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Capacity:</strong> 1 MW<br></li>



<li><strong>Energy storage:</strong> 2 MWh<br></li>



<li><strong>Round-trip efficiency:</strong> 95%<br></li>



<li><strong>Charging price:</strong> –$40/MWh<br></li>



<li><strong>Discharge price during event:</strong> ~$20,000/MWh<br></li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This isn’t a large utility-scale asset; it’s closer to the scale being considered by many commercial and distributed projects.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Event Dispatch Economics</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If the battery charged during negative pricing earlier in the day and discharged into the evening spike:</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Energy discharged:</strong> 2 MWh</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Gross revenue:<br></strong> 2 MWh × $20,000 = <strong>$40,000</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To supply that energy, the battery would need to charge approximately <strong>2.10 MWh</strong>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At <strong>–$40/MWh</strong>, the battery is effectively paid to absorb excess energy:</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Charging revenue:</strong> ≈ <strong>$84</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">👉 <strong>Net margin from the event</strong>:</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"> <strong>≈ $40,084</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One volatility window does not justify an investment on its own.<br>But it demonstrates how value is created in a system where flexibility is scarce at critical moments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Why Extreme Events Matter, Even If They’re Rare</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Battery investment cases are rarely built on repeated price-cap events. Instead, they rely on a combination of:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Frequent moderate spreads<br></li>



<li>Occasional high-price intervals<br></li>



<li>Additional service revenues<br></li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, a small number of extreme events can contribute disproportionately to annual returns. They provide a financial “tailwind” that can materially improve project economics.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As renewable penetration increases, the market is likely to see:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>More negative pricing during periods of surplus generation<br></li>



<li>More scarcity pricing during tight supply windows<br></li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That combination strengthens the long-term revenue outlook for storage.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Bigger Signal From October</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The real takeaway from the October event isn’t the $20,000 price.<br>It’s that the drivers behind it were entirely predictable.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Demand rose. Solar faded. Wind was subdued. Capacity was tight.<br>Prices responded accordingly.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Predictable volatility is investable volatility.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And that predictability is what gives investors confidence that storage revenues aren’t purely speculative; they’re grounded in observable market behaviour.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Why the Timing Question Has Shifted</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For years, the key question around batteries was technological:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The October price event wasn’t a once-in-a-generation anomaly. It was a snapshot of a grid adapting to a new generation mix, one where flexibility is increasingly valuable.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For commercial energy users and investors, the implication is clear. Batteries are no longer just a hedge against volatility; they are a means of monetising it.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The question is shifting from <em>whether storage will play a role</em> to <em>when organisations should seriously evaluate the opportunity</em>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With spreads widening, revenue streams diversifying, and technology costs continuing to ease, the alignment between market conditions and project economics is stronger than it has been before.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Which makes now not just an interesting time to talk about batteries, but a logical time to review them.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Batteries are gaining serious traction among Australian businesses, but a handful of persistent myths are still causing hesitation. Here&#8217;s what the evidence actually says.</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://sustainableenergysolutions.com.au/the-business-case-for-commercial-batteries-how-large-energy-users-can-reduce-costs-in-2026-and-beyond/">The business case for commercial batteries has never been stronger</a>. Costs have fallen sharply, revenue streams have multiplied, and the market volatility that once made batteries look speculative now makes them look essential.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And yet, many businesses are sitting on the sidelines, often because of concerns that don&#8217;t hold up under scrutiny.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Myth 1: &#8220;You need solar to have a battery&#8221;</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Understandable, given how batteries are marketed to households. But for commercial businesses, the more valuable operating mode often has nothing to do with solar.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A Front of Meter or VPP battery, connected with a child meter, can participate directly in the Spot markets, buying energy when prices are low (or negative, which now happens 15% of the time) and discharging when prices spike during evening peaks. This is <strong>wholesale energy arbitrage</strong>, and it&#8217;s where much of the commercial revenue opportunity lies. Batteries can also earn revenue through <strong>Frequency Control Ancillary Services (FCAS)</strong> simply by being available to stabilise the grid.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Solar can enhance battery economics by lowering site demand during the day which provides capacity for the battery to charge during peak periods. In addition, the Federal Government&#8217;s Cheaper Batteries Program requires it for smaller systems.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>The reality:</strong> Solar helps, but it&#8217;s optional.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Myth 2: &#8220;Batteries are too expensive&#8221;</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Battery hardware and installation costs have fallen <strong>20–30% in the past year alone</strong>. The Federal Government&#8217;s <strong>Cheaper Batteries Program</strong> (available since 1 July 2025) brings installed costs for smaller systems (under 100 kWh) close to half of what they were in 2024. For larger systems, scale enables more aggressive participation in wholesale markets and grid services, where revenue can fund a substantial portion of the asset over its life.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The right question isn&#8217;t &#8220;is this cheap?&#8221;. It&#8217;s &#8220;what&#8217;s the payback, and what&#8217;s the revenue upside?&#8221; Both answers have improved significantly.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>The reality:</strong> Costs have fallen sharply and incentives have improved. Projects that looked marginal 18 months ago are increasingly clearing investment hurdles today.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Myth 3: &#8220;Batteries are a fire risk&#8221;</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Modern commercial BESS include <strong>built-in fire suppression</strong>, real-time remote monitoring, and automatic shutdown capabilities. In Australia, installations must comply with Standards Australia and Clean Energy Council requirements, and all systems are signed off by relevant authorities, including local fire services, before going live.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A fair comparison isn&#8217;t &#8220;batteries vs. no risk&#8221;. It&#8217;s batteries vs. the diesel generators and fuel tanks many businesses already operate on-site. Properly installed commercial systems compare well.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>The reality:</strong> Fire risk is real but well-managed with modern technology and reputable installation. Safety compliance is built into the process.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Myth 4: &#8220;Batteries don’t last very long&#8221;</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In early battery implementations and early EVs, going back 10+ years, batteries had material limitations on their useful life. They would typically be ‘good’ for only 1,000 cycles (of charging and discharging), which would mean a life expectancy of around 5 years if operated on a daily basis.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since then, an enormous amount of R&amp;D (CATL, the world&#8217;s biggest battery manufacturer, employs over 20,000 PHD level scientists) and manufacturing scale has improved this. Commercial batteries are typically warranted for 5-10,000 cycles and 10 years of operation. This is just the warranty, and actual performance is likely much better, with some high use EVs and commercial batteries showing excellent performance after millions of kms and tens of thousands of cycles.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>The reality:</strong> Improved technology and manufacturing scale have significantly progressed commercial batteries, which now typically perform over tens of thousands of charging cycles.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Myth 5: &#8220;A battery automatically works as backup power&#8221;</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This one can catch businesses off guard, and it&#8217;s better to know before installation than after.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Standard grid-connected batteries are configured to operate with the grid and <strong>will not automatically island your site</strong> during a blackout. This is a deliberate safety feature. Backup capability requires additional hardware (an automatic transfer switch), specific configuration, and careful load-sizing decisions.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s entirely achievable, and for businesses where outages cause genuine financial pain, it can easily justify the additional cost. But it needs to be designed in from the start.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>The reality:</strong> Backup power is possible, not automatic. If it&#8217;s a priority, raise it early, as it changes the system design and the cost.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Myth 6: &#8220;Insurance and compliance will be a headache&#8221;</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Insurers are now well-acquainted with commercial batteries, and coverage is widely available. They&#8217;ll want documentation on technical specs, installation standards, and fire safety compliance, all things a reputable installer produces as standard. Compliance requirements (CEC accreditation, Australian Standards, local authority sign-off) are well-established and routine for experienced providers.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>The reality:</strong> Straightforward with the right installer. The paperwork your insurer needs is the same documentation you should be demanding anyway.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Bottom Line</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These myths share a common thread: they were either never accurate, or they were accurate once and the world has moved on.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What hasn&#8217;t changed is the underlying problem batteries solve. Australia has the world&#8217;s most volatile electricity market. Evening peak prices regularly spike into the hundreds of dollars per megawatt hour. The gap between cheap midday solar and expensive evening peaks is exactly what commercial batteries are designed to exploit, and that gap is widening.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The businesses that move first tend to secure better terms, access more of the available incentives, and benefit from earlier payback on an asset that only becomes more valuable as the transition accelerates.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Over the past year, a combination of falling battery costs, expanding market revenue streams and new government incentives has quietly transformed the commercial battery landscape. What was once a nice idea is increasingly becoming a serious financial asset for large energy users across Australia.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In this post, we’ll walk through the business case for commercial batteries. The benefits, the costs, and why the economics work now.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Benefits</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Batteries are often sold as a single solution, but in reality, they are more like a financial tool with multiple levers.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Pull one lever and you reduce demand peaks.<br>Pull another and you trade the wholesale market.<br>Pull a third and you buy insurance against outages.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can’t usually maximise all of them at once. The real value comes from understanding how each operating mode works and how to combine them intelligently.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">1 &amp; 2 &#8211; Load Following and Peak Lopping</h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is the traditional battery story.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Charge when demand is low or solar is abundant. Discharge when usage spikes. Smooth out the load profile and reduce network peak demand charges.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It works well in residential settings and for smaller businesses with high retail tariffs and plenty of excess solar.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For large energy users, though, the maths is less compelling.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On its own, peak shaving rarely delivers the returns needed to justify the capital investment.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">3 &amp; 4 &#8211; Virtual Power Plants and Demand Response</h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is where batteries start behaving less like infrastructure and more like financial assets.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Through Virtual Power Plant programs, batteries can participate directly in the wholesale electricity market. They can charge when prices collapse, sometimes even going negative and discharging when the market tightens and prices spike.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Those spikes can reach extraordinary levels, tens of dollars per kilowatt-hour, not cents.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On top of that come additional revenue streams such as FCAS, which pay batteries to stabilise the grid.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Demand response works in a similar way, driven by market signals such as Western Australia’s Reserve Capacity Mechanism.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These events don’t happen every day, but when they do, they are where a large portion of battery revenue is generated.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">5 &#8211; Back-Up Power</h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Then there’s the simplest benefit of all: keeping the lights on.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For some businesses, a short outage is an inconvenience.<br>For others, it’s lost production, damaged equipment, missed deadlines and real financial pain.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A battery providing even 30 minutes of back-up power can quietly save thousands of dollars when it matters most often while still earning revenue the rest of the year.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Costs</h2>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Batteries are getting cheaper</h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is the part that’s changed fastest.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Battery supply and installation costs have fallen sharply through 2025. Industry pricing data now shows declines of around 20% on recent averages, with real-time project costs in some cases closer to 30% lower than a year ago.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When capital costs fall by a third, payback periods fall with them. Projects that once looked marginal are suddenly investable.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Small Batteries (Under 100 kWh)</h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For smaller commercial systems, the economics improve even further thanks to the Federal Government’s <strong>Cheaper Batteries Program</strong>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When falling hardware costs are combined with this incentive, the installed price of a small battery today is close to half of what it was in 2024.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For businesses with existing solar or those considering installing it: This is where battery paybacks have started to look genuinely compelling.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Larger Batteries</h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Larger systems don’t receive an upfront subsidy, but they don’t need one in many cases.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Their scale allows them to participate more aggressively in wholesale markets, VPP programs and grid services where the revenue upside can be substantial.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the right locations, with the right operating strategy, large batteries are increasingly being treated as revenue-generating assets rather than cost-saving equipment.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">The Cheaper Batteries Program – Key Points</h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Cheaper Batteries Program has been in effect since <strong>1 July 2025</strong>, and is available to businesses of all sizes and industries.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The main conditions are straightforward:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Total battery capacity must be 100 kWh or less per site</li>



<li>The site must have solar installed (or install it alongside the battery)</li>



<li>The incentive can only be claimed once per site</li>



<li>The battery must be VPP-ready</li>



<li>The system must be approved and installed by an accredited provider</li>



<li>Off-grid systems more than 1 km from the grid are eligible</li>
</ul>
