The Project

To take advantage of the current market for a renowned Aged Care client located in Victoria, SES carried out a competitive tender reaching out to multiple electricity and gas suppliers.

Outcome

Sustainable Energy Solutions’ unique approach to gas procurement has enabled many of our aged care clients to save up to 35% against their current spend. These savings took effect immediately.

The client also saved a 32% over a 24-month contract on the electricity spend which was secured for 2022/23.

Solar assessment

In 2020, SES provided the client with a solar assessment illustrating the payback periods for a variety of system sizes without having to meet with multiple suppliers on site. This enabled the client to assess the feasibility of a solar project and establish a budget. SES has recently reassessed the project providing the client with an updated proposal, so that the client could apply for a government grant.

Aussie turf grower saves 23% on energy costs with Sustainable Energy Solutions

Sustainable Energy Solutions (SES) works with one of the largest and most reputable turf growers in Queensland.

The Project

SES was engaged by the turf grower to assist them in reducing their energy costs across 13 sites.

SES ran a competitive tender reaching out to multiple electricity retailers. We were able to present the client with five prices across various contract periods. This gave the client transparency into retailer pricing and enabled them to make a more informed decision for their business.

Outcome

Based on the tender results, SES secured a 23% saving over a 36 months contract which the client could switch to immediately. In addition, our team requested a special meter read to enable the client to take advantage of the savings sooner than if they had waited for the regular reading to take place.

As part of the tendering process, we were able to consolidate the client’s 13 electricity meters into a single invoice, a single contract end date and a single meter reading date, thereby reducing the administrative load on the client.

How SES reduced energy use of one of Australia’s leading distributors of home fixtures by 90,794 kWh per year

Established in 1978, this SES client is one of Australia’s leading distributors of unique home fittings, fixtures and furniture. The company has evolved from humble beginnings to 80+ employees currently.

The Project

Sustainable Energy Solutions (SES) started working with this distributor in 2014. Since then, SES has assisted in analysing their electricity bills and data, spotting an opportunity to decrease the client’s energy cost by installing Solar at their North Geelong site in Victoria.

Outcome

Based on the energy consumption at the site, a 99.2 kW solar was recommended, which reduced the annual power consumption by 56%.

SES managed all aspects of the project, including liaising with the suppliers, managing the relationship with the client and arranging all the necessary documentation pre and post the solar installation. Throughout any energy efficiency project, our role at SES is to troubleshoot any challenges, answer any questions from the start of the project to the end and provide suppliers with client feedback.

‘The client will reduce their total electricity consumption by 90,794 kWh per year, saving approximately $341,918 over a 15- year period from their energy bill.’

How SES assessed and procured solar PV options for multi-site aged care facility in Victoria.

Assess

SES was engaged by Benetas to Assess and Procure solar PV options for their aged care facilities. We identified the four best sites for solar and the optimal solar configuration for each.

Procure

We received Initial Offers from eight Suppliers and shortlisted three suppliers for the Final Offers round. The successful Supplier was Origin Energy, and the projects were installed in 2019, on time and on budget.

Operate

Continuous real-time monitoring by Beam Solar identified an inverter fault at one of the sites that was promptly rectified by the Supplier. System performance has average 3% above estimates to date.

A leading multi-site care provider saves over 30% on electricity and gas and goes solar

A leading aged care provider approached Sustainable Energy Solutions in 2017 with a problem: energy spend was adversely affecting their business and their previous energy supplier didn’t offer 90% of the services we offer. Our client needed a long term partner who could manage their large multisite electricity and gas portfolio, not just simply facilitate a procurement transaction. Their gas and electricity portfolio consisted of more than 50 supply points across small and large market categories.

The Project

To help our client regain control and make serious energy savings, we took a multi-pronged approach over several years:

Initially, SES’ procurement experts began working with this client by tracking the market and securing new (significantly cheaper) electricity contracts across the client’s entire portfolio.
Our primary contact, the Procurement Manager, was impressed by our strategic approach to energy procurement, our knowledge, dedicated account management, and awareness of cost-reduction opportunities. She introduced us to the Property Infrastructure Manager who was looking for solar options at four facilities. Using a solar assessment platform, we helped our client calculate the potential ROI of a range of system sizes and determined the optimal size for each site before going to market for a supplier. Through this process we defined a project scope and minimum requirements that formed part of the tender. We then ran a competitive procurement process that involved assessing the best price, system specifications, and terms and conditions. All four installations were successfully completed in 2019 with minimal disturbance or interruptions to the client’s residents and their families, a key concern for any infrastructure project in aged care facilities.
In November 2020, our client’s small-market gas contracts that we had secured two years earlier, were up for renewal. After running a full tender with small-market gas suppliers, we identified an opportunity where small-market sites with aggregated gas consumption above XXX megajoules (MJ) could be shifted to a far cheaper gas contract.
Currently, we are helping our client look at battery storage as an alternative to traditional (and expensive) back-up generators.

Outcome

Our client shaved over 30% off their electricity and gas spend compared to what they would have spent on traditional small-market contracts. They also tapped into a cash-positive solar project which enabled them to add value to their business, and regain control of their electricity costs.

A large food manufacturer, located in Victoria, has high demands for electricity due to their vast production lines, packaging operations and refrigeration needs.

The Project

Sustainable Energy Solutions has been supporting their business with electricity and gas procurement for over 8 years. As a large user of both gas and electricity, they understand the impact of energy cost on their business and we’ve worked together to engage key stakeholders in the business.

Having considered solar a few years earlier, they understood the benefits of investing in renewables but didn’t proceed as the time as other capital projects often took priority. In 2021 we recommenced discussions around solar as the client could take advantage of the Victorian Energy Efficiency Certificates (VEECs) and the Instant Asset Write Off (IAWO) which was coming to a close in FY2022.

Project Time Frames
A tight deadline was placed on this project by the board, requesting installation within 9 weeks from the contract execution date. The challenge of investing in solar is knowing who to go with and comparing offers. On behalf of our client, we assessed 12 initial offers for 1,200kW rooftop solar panels from different retailers, and upon review, shortlisted three to present to their Procurement Manager, CEO, CFO and Board.

Outcome

A supplier was chosen and we proceeded to provide design review, project management and owners engineer services throughout the installation process. Given the tight deadline, the supplier had the solar panels sent interstate the day after contract execution, and brought a team of 15 staff to the site to ensure the installation was timely and to a high standard.

The result was the completion of a large-scale solar project (1,200kW rooftop) on time and seamlessly.

The team at Sustainable Energy Solutions didn’t simply broker the solar deal, we took the complexity out of investing in solar for the client. The process was simplified to just one site visit by our solar experts, to assess the requirements and sizing. We provided end-to-end expertise from defining the project scope, requesting initial offers, scoring quotes independently against a set criteria, awarding the project and monitoring the implementation phase.

Our independent report scores offers were based on materials, price, warranties, deliverables and timeframes. Upon completion of the project, the system was audited to ensure it met the Clean Energy Council regulation and fully operational.
