Top tips to starting an energy and carbon Reduction Strategy

With wholesale energy costs at unprecedented prices, more and more of our clients are seeking solutions to reduce their energy consumption and examine the potential long-term financial benefits of investing in a carbon strategy.

If your business is looking at ways to reduce your energy spend and carbon emissions, it’s important to take a planned approach. As experts in energy, we advise businesses to create an energy efficiency strategic plan, using the following steps:

STEP 1 - FIND YOUR ENERGY CHAMPIONS

Form a team of ‘energy champions’ by engaging key stakeholders from across the business. Your energy champions should meet regularly and take a long-term strategic approach to energy management.

STEP 2 - SET SMART GOALS

Together set your energy targets and goals, and assign responsibilities and guidelines to each of your energy champions.

STEP 3 - DEFINE OPPORTUNITIES

Conduct an Energy Audit with the guidance of an energy expert. This will not only identify any quick wins; a comprehensive audit will result in an ongoing energy management program that defines short and long-term opportunities. An audit will look at: heating, ventilation and cool equipment, lighting, improvement to BMS, motors pumps and fans, power faction correction and demand resets, rooftop solar options, energy storage and more.

STEP 4 - CREATE A ROADMAP

Create an Energy and Carbon Strategy. Experts can assist your business to map the correct path in order to achieve your carbon targets.

" Recently, our team put together a 2030 Emissions Reduction Plan for a multi-national healthcare company. Their annual spend on energy had exceeded $2M due to the significant increases in global gas and electricity prices this year. Our objective was to prepare a comprehensive roadmap which their Sustainability Manager could roll out over the next 8 years. The project involved conducting a target evaluation, assessing baseline emissions/sources, projecting future emissions, assessing energy reduction projects, energy cost analysis, carbon abatement cost curve, budget preparation and more. With the surge in Environmental Social Governance (ESG) within supply chains, and a push to net zero emissions, more and more businesses operating in Australia will be needing energy plans to meet their 2030 targets. “, Nick Johnson, Head of Account Management.

STEP 5 - RESEARCH REBATES

Ensure that your energy champions or energy consultant investigate available grants and rebates as these could fast track your projects and help you achieve some of your goals.

A strategic energy plan will help your business reduce your energy consumption, cut greenhouse emissions and achieve sustainable long-term savings.
